An original visual development project. A socially anxious little girl escapes to her backyard for a pretend tea party, only to discover a fantastical world where she learns how to belong alongside her toy companions.
In this poster, I wanted to captures the moment when the young protagonist discovers giant magical mushrooms in her backyard and is filled with wonder. The small mushroom-shaped garden lights that once lined the backyard path have transformed into an enchanted forest, reflecting the world as she imagines it.
Junie sets up her grandmother’s tea set on a patio table, placing her favorite toys in the chairs as guests for a tea party. As she pours tea into her cup, it begins to glow with magical effects such as rainbows, light, and sparkling energy. In an instant, her toy friends come to life and the backyard transforms into an enchanted forest.
Early Concept ↓
After the backyard transforms through magic, the sandbox becomes a vast desert. The sandcastle Junie once built grows into a towering structure, and she plays hide and seek with her toy friends among its walls. As the seeker, Junie searches for her friends through the giant castle, capturing a joyful moment that contrasts with her difficulty connecting with other children at school.
Exploring different compositions and color palettes to find the strongest visual storytelling for this scene.↑
After the backyard pool transforms into a vast sea, an accident sends Rabbit tumbling into the water. Junie and her toy friends climb into a lifeboat, racing to rescue Rabbit from the waves.
I focused on portraying the sea in a simple yet effective way, exploring both sharp, angular shapes and rounded forms. ↑
After successfully rescuing Rabbit , the group gathers around a campfire to dry their wet clothes and fur. In this scene, I wanted to capture a quiet moment of calm after the crisis, focusing on the emotional connection between Junie and the Rabbit as they share a sense of safety and relief.
In the early color studies, the blue tones in the background felt slightly eerie. To introduce a warmer, more comforting mood, I shifted the background color toward purple.
